The colorful stone design creates a dreamlike staircase

In this year’s Milan Design Week, Ellen van Loon and Giulio Margheri created an installation that was commissioned by SolidNature that will take place within the basement and in the garden of the neoRomanesque Casa Maveri in the Brera District.

Loon and Margheri created this installation to be the “immersive landscape” with a variety made of stone quarried from the earth. They can be arranged in a way to encourage visitors to “dream and test the limits of imagination”.

The foundation of the exhibit space is comprised of rooms that illustrate the creation and reprocessing in natural stone. Through collaboration with various designer guests The garden displays their unique approaches to processing natural stone into products.

The trip starts with an impressive staircase leading to the basement level. In the middle of the staircase, there is an open space lined with transparent onyx slabs. They are intended to represent the compression of stones and “the very narrow and focused focus of our life.”

The passageway is followed by a large room that is filled with monoliths made consisting of granite, marble, onyx, and travertine hung by the ceiling.

The room that is covered from ceiling to floor with pink onyx shows the material with different finishes such as rough, fluted as well as polished stone.

The room, dubbed”the Hall of Revelations was designed to symbolize the beginning of dreams, and to encourage people to think about the possibilities that lie within their imaginations. Between two rotating onyx walls is a space encased in natural green marble. Vignettes are dotted along the walls to symbolize the realization of dreams.

Beyond The Surface’s final stage Beyond The Surface is the landscape, which is decorated with a sculptured stone bar and table created by Sabine Marcelis, a grandstand as well as a stage designed by the Dutch-Italian pair Studio Ossidiana, and functional sculptures created by Iranian Artist Bita Fayaazi.

“This year’s exhibit will focus on the power of nature. it provides a glimpse of the process of compressive and swell which resulted in the development of stone that we see it today.” says Ellen van Loon OMA’s Partner. OMA.

“The installation offers an insight into the many possible treatments, techniques, and methods of designing using natural stones,” adds Giulio Margheri Associate at OMA.

Time was the main narrative in the creation of the installation as per the CEO of SolidNature, David Mahyari who states, “We are excited to collaborate together with Ellen and Giulio once more for the next installation of SolidNature’s presence in Milan and we look forward to continuing building our ongoing partnership to OMA.”

Beyond the Surface is a follow-up to Monumental Wonders, SolidNature’s first installation created by OMA and OMA, that took place at Alcova in the course of Milan Design Week 2022
